Deconstructing and Constructing Media Texts in Dialogue

The DICE project, 2017 continues the fruitful cooperation from 2013 and 2014, AW4SEE. DICE is a multilateral academic collaboration between institutions of higher education from Germany (Chemnitz), Macedonia (Ohrid, Bitola), Albania (Vlora) and Serbia (Niš). It aims to establish a West-East Dialogue and digest/process crises in Europe through the deconstruction and construction of Media Texts. For this purpose, the project treats various aspects and methods of corpus linguistics and media discourse analysis. It is funded by the DAAD and it includes a workshop, a summer school and a REAL volume on news discourse. read more

Study and exchange

Workshop in Niš, May 2017

The workshop is Niš gathered all the partners to discuss regarding the present project and its future, organisational and teaching aspects of the Summer School. Each participant introduced some key issues of the topic in a short presentation. Several Niš students from a variety of academic disciplines participated. Two workgroups worked on two News volumes:

  • "Deconstructing the News" (Dana, Irena, Bledar, Jovanka)
  • "Constructing the News" (Josef, Vincenzo, Bisera)

Summer School in Macedonia, August 2017

In August, we met our project partners (teachers) and their students from Ohrid, Bitola, Skopje, Vlora and Nis at the Congress Center from Skopje University on the shore of Lake Ohrid. The lake connects Albania and Macedonia as the Summer School brought together students from Albania, Serbia and Macedonia. In mixed-group and scaffolded activities, the students discussed the construction and deconstruction of international news. All the teachers presented their topics regarding media discourse analysis in short presentations (see teacher presentations below). They analyzed current media genres like opinion pieces, reports etc., but also from everyday life like blog posts, Facebook etc. It was a successful project because it enabled students to constuct news (e.g. writing news reports) and deconstruct news (e.g. analyzing verbs on blogs&hedges). In a friendly environment, they also learned about each-others' cultures and gave us positive feedback:

"I think that my critical thinking has developed a lot. It made me realize that everything has at least 2 sides to consider. The summer school has also made me more interested in media texts analysis, which was a new area for me."

REAL 12

Working with MediaTexts. Deconstructing and Constructing Crises in Europe.

The present volume is the productive result of multilateral academic collaboration between institutions of higher education from Germany (Chemnitz), Macedonia (Ohrid, Bitola), Albania (Vlora) and Serbia (Niš). The collaboration, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), was set up to establish a West-East Dialogue and a better understanding and processing of the crises in Europe through the deconstruction and construction of media texts. The contributions in this volume illustrate how "crises" are constructed by the media discursively, with attention paid to the linguistic elements of media texts, and in some cases accompanying images. The authors in this volume are students and established scholars that come from different but intersecting disciplines. They each focus on different "crises" in different (national) media outlets, offering new perspectives on how social, political and geographical events may be shaped by the media, and how these mediatised portrayals may in turn influence public perspectives on a range of issues.

 

The book REAL 12 follows the successful series of REAL publications. Research in English and Applied Linguistics (=REAL) is Josef Schmied's book series published in Göttingen, Germany by Cuvillier Verlag, publishing company.
